The Commodore Z 300+ Followers Special Update!
Thank you, one and all. As a special treat, I give you one of the most unique items in my retro computer collection: an Amiga 2000 that supposedly belonged to Bil Herd.
The following is a dramatization, and may not reflect the exact exchange that lead to it being in my possession.
At the Vintage Computer Festival East 9.1 in 2014, I was hanging out in the consignment booth area with a few folks. In walks in one of the other members of MARCH holding a computer case. He asked “Anyone want whats left of an Amiga 2000?”
For once when it came to free stuff, I was on the ball and I immediately said something to the effect of “Sold!”
“It was apparently Bil Herd’s, and it’s missing most of the chips and the drives”, he continued.
“You had me at ‘Bil Herd’”, I proclaimed as he handed it to me.
“It’s also full of mouse shit. Still want it?”, he asked
“I don’t care, I’ll still take it.” and while the rest of the folks in the room looked on with amusement and a few laughs, I made a hasty (yet giddy) retreat to my car. Once my prize was in the trunk, I headed back inside.
Currently, my Amiga 2000 sits in storage about 300 miles away from me. One day, I’ll clean out all the mouse shit and nesting material and see if it’s completely beyond repair. Most of the socketed chips, drives, and expansion cards were harvested before it made its way to me. Seems a few MARCH members are responsible for that.
I also need to ask Bil if this was his when I see him in April at VCFeX. Based on his track record with older machines, I would say that the state of this hardware matches other Commodore’s of his I’ve seen.
Thank you again, and I hope you have enjoyed this special post.
